Personal Finance is one of the most critical “self-skills” we can all possess. It is the knowledge, skill, and discipline to guide our financial well-being our entire lives.
YourDictionary.com has an excellent and direct definition:
Personal finance is defined as the management of money and financial decisions for a person or family including budgeting, investments, retirement planning and investments.
Not only is it critical to ask ourselves if we are on the right track, the stark reality is it often is learned. Not as a child; not as an adult.
So what do we do?
Personal Finance Basics
There are many aspects of Personal Finance. The first perspective to share is this:
This is not a sprint – it is a marathon!
This partial list of makes up Personal Finance is not meant to intimidate you, but it should reinforce the fact that it will take some time and some effort.
- Financial Position like Net Worth and Cash Flow
- Asset Protection in the form of insurance and emergency savings account
- Tax Planning to help you make decisions that won’t force to you pay excessive taxes
- Savings and Investment Plans to help guide you to short, medium, and long term goals
- Retirement Planning to figure out how much you’ll need, and when
- Finally, Estate Planning will help minimize the impacts to your heirs
Stop shaking! I know this is an intimidating list. Over time, we will break each one apart, into small, very straightforward pieces and address them one at a time. Watch for more updates in the future on these and other Personal Finance topics.
High School Curriculum
There is a small, but emerging trend in some high schools to introduce a form of personal finance. Many of us have been balancing a checkbook for so many years, we may have forgotten how we learned. And this is just one basic skill!
How to budget, save for a major purchase, and manage debt are all skills critical to every adult’s well being. My personal hope is that high schools bring back these subjects to help our students from the beginning.
For now, rely on JADCOM Media to explore all these topics – and more – as we walk through everything from the basics to advanced topics.
Investing in Stocks and Mutual Funds
The first area to explore is the way I approach investing in stocks and mutual funds. Follow along as I report every step of the way. I share what I choose to buy, and I’ll tell you when I sell. This is not day trading, but what I call a “semi-active” trading model.
This is what I call the “Ride the Fast Horse” model. Check in often to see how I’m doing!
